The event includes samples of the cocktails, a commemorative glass, food pairings from the restaurants, and the premiere of Hey Bartender, the story of the rebirth of the bartender and the comeback of the cocktail.

They expand our capacity for empathy. They stimulate our imagination and spur creativity. When you think about the world we live in, it becomes obvious our future depends on creative solutions to our complex challenges — solutions built on a broader perspective, with deeper empathy, and endless collaboration. The arts matter because they can shape our future.

Julie Andrews explains it well in her recent address to the graduating class at Colorado University.

]]> Once again this year we get to show several new French films concurrent with their New York premieres at The Film Society of Lincoln Center. This year the six that we will show include an animated dark comedy called “The Suicide Shop,” a psychological drama with Charlotte Gainsbourg titled “Persecution,” and an adaptation of the 20th century classic novel “Thérèse Desqueyroux” starring Audrey Tautou. We hope to get to participate in some online Q&A sessions following selected screenings, including one with Mlle. Tautou herself. These screenings will take place March 3-9, just before the week of the Boulder Jewish Film Festival, so March will be an extremely busy month at The Boe. Also, in March: “Rust and Bone” – March 15-20, and Oscar Shorts, both Live Action and Animation – March 20-30. All these will be going on sale soon, so check the website for exact dates and times.

]]> An essential aspect of The Boe is partnership with community organizations. In this way, screenings are an outgrowth of our already strong institutions, rather than one more thing competing for attention.
In February, we are pleased and proud to be working with BCAP, Boulder County Aids Project, on our screenings of the Oscar-nominated documentary HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE. Among other things, they are organizing a panel discussion after the Feb 6, 7pm screening. BCAP started in 1985, just a few years after the first AIDS case was diagnosed, with just two volunteers. Now it serves over 200 men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, and provides around a thousand rapid HIV tests and counseling sessions per year. In that same time period, the number of AIDS cases in the US has gone from just over 20,000 to over a million, emphasizing the continued need for research, testing, treatment, and support around this epidemic.
Another cornerstone of the Boulder community, KGNU, is coming up on it’s 35th year of providing Boulder access to the airwaves. This volunteer-powered institution provides unique programming and a voice to our diverse perspectives. They are helping The Boe present the documentary RADIO UNNAMEABLE, which tells about the role of listener-supported radio in our history through the story of Bob Fass, a seminal character in New York’s FM radio scene. After the opening night screening on Feb 20, we hope have folks from KGNU interacting live via internet with someone from the movie team, either the filmmakers or Fass himself. Stay tuned for more exciting news about this.
